The pandemic has essentially killed cinemas for most of the past 18 months. Most of the big movie chains have reopened, but my favorite theater in Connecticut, the state’s oldest, continuously run, didn’t. Until now.

I just received a great email from the owners of the Bantam Cinema, located at 115 Bantam Lake Road, and they are going to reopen on Halloween weekend and offer their first public film screenings since March 2020.

Bantam Cinema is my favorite movie theater, not only because of its small size and great location, but it also only offered the best indie or mainstream movies in the highest quality. Obviously, we’re just seeing the movie industry put its legs under them after suffering such devastating losses from the pandemic, so the movies that hit theaters haven’t got me off my couch yet. Bantam Cinema chose the classic for its first public screenings.

For Halloween weekend 2021, Bantam Cinema will reopen to present two screenings of George A. Romero’s cult classic Night of the Living Dead. Friday and Saturday October 29 and 30, 2021 at 7 p.m.

This is just the first step in a big plan for Bantam Cinemas, the new board of directors announced on bantamcinema.org that their expansion plans include guest speakers, panel discussions, theme nights, special films and more. The board also hopes that by the end of 2022 they will be able to offer live events – music, comedy nights and cabarets.

I love to see the arts and institutions come back. It has been far too long.

Watch the big game on the biggest screen in town. Participant AMC Theaters broadcast a selection of live games for free every Sunday. The only catch to witness all your favorite football action – each game reservation requires a prepaid $ 10 food and drink, which can be used on game day or saved for a future visit to the AMC.

Cheaper than watching a game at your local bar

While sports fans can usually catch professional football matches at their local bar, this tab can add up quickly. AMC theaters offer a larger screen than the bar, and most theaters have oversized, comfortable recliners. Plus, no tip is required to relax and enjoy your game day snacks.

Game selection varies by theater, but some live game lineup is posted every Friday night so you can decide which games to book or skip. Unfortunately, local games will not be displayed.

Use your $ 10 prepaid food and drink credit on movie game day specials like pizza, nachos, or popcorn. For those wondering, you can always enjoy an ice cold beer, a craft cocktail or a glass of wine from MacGuffins Bar inside AMC cinemas.

Movie theaters have undoubtedly been hit hard during the pandemic, but the Look Dine-In Theater chain has been hit the hardest. The movie theater chain closed in 2020, closing its only north Texas location on Belt Line Road in Addison.

It was then that Brian Schultz, the new CEO of Look Cinemas and founder of the Studio Movie Grill chain, set to work to relaunch the Look Cinema franchise.

“From my perspective, there are jerks,” says Schultz, “but generally the big screen is back.”

Look reopened its movie theater experience at a new location on Technology Boulevard in mid-summer along with five additional national locations. While the pandemic has forced theaters to close or file for bankruptcy – like the Studio Movie Grill, which Schultz left – it has also given chains time to revamp their business model.

“COVID gave us a chance to start over with a blank sheet of paper and really innovate and project what movie theaters would be like and the era of dinner and movie theater experiences,” Schultz said. “I think there is going to be a movement of people totally embracing him.”

Customers can order much more than popcorn and candy during movie screenings at the Look Dine-In Theater.

Look has moved much of its theater to make screenings and private events more accessible. The movie theater restaurant offers a lower theater rental price of $ 99 for customers and “as many guests as you want,” Schultz said.

“We’re definitely not at the same level as we were before the pandemic, but the content has also been a bit patchy,” Schultz said. “My personal conviction is that the [James] Bond movie that we got to see extended trailers for in Las Vegas in mid-October, that’s when we’ll start to return to pre-COVID attendance levels. ”

Customers can hire the theater to watch preview or classic screenings, organize private events and even play games or watch esports events on the big screen. The theater hosted a private viewing experience of free guy featuring Ryan Reynolds to share their new experience of watching movies and dining in action. Customers can order meals from a full menu of starters and entrees via their phone during the pre-screening period while enjoying a movie or anything else on the big screen, in a plush armchair and comfortable.

“We’re movie buffs and absolutely think it’s an important time for the community to come together and have the group experience that you can only get in a darkroom movie theater,” Schultz said.

Even if the cinemas are open again, the public is not flooding them as before the pandemic. Schultz says he expects that to change.

“They’re not used to going to the movies anymore, but they’re also tired of sitting on the couch and watching a movie, no matter how big the television is,” says Schultz. “When you see an image on the big screen and everyone can get that feeling again… people want to bring it back.”

An old Broken Arrow cinema gets a facelift in Hollywood.

It’s in New Orleans Square, a neighborhood the city has struggled to attract more business to. The colors on the outside are purple, green, and gold to suit the New Orleans theme. Building owner Robby Winford says he wants people to feel like they’re on Bourbon Street in Broken Arrow.

“Just to have a place where the whole family can come and watch a movie and enjoy their family,” Winford said.

Winford owns a section of buildings on South Elm Place. He bought the old cinema building about a year ago and when a former tenant’s plans failed he decided to bring it back to life.

It’s called the New Orleans Square Theater.

“My vision is going to be like a Mardi Gras party. Everyone come in, we’re going to give them pearls and we’re going to have a good time,” Winford said.

Winford says inside there will be a bar and eight cinemas. He says there will be unique seats like bar stools, rocking chairs, and recliners. Plus, he says concessions and tickets will be cheaper than typical movie theaters.

Winford says the plan is to show comedies, new releases, and locally shot movies like The Outsiders.

“We just want to bring this part of town back to life,” Winford said.

“By the way, it used to be the place to be in Broken Arrow. It was the place to be,” said Steve Yoder, Retention and Business Development Coordinator for the Town of Broken Arrow.

Yoder says the old theater has been vacant for about a decade.

He says it’s full of memories for a lot of people who grew up in the movies in Broken Arrow.

“Lots of first kisses here, lots of first dates here,” Yoder said. “And people really love this area because that’s where they grew up. The first PG-13 movie they ever saw, or whatever, you know the first R-rated movie.”

Soon the theater will regain its former glory.

“We hope that Broken Arrow will come and support it, as they have done before,” Yoder said.

The owners are planning a smooth opening with a free movie at the end of October.

Global consumer electronics leader LG Electronics is bringing cinema home with its first-ever Direct View LED (DVLED) series for high-end residential installations.

With its LG DVLED Extreme Home Cinema, the Korean electronics giant marks its first foray into the luxury residential display market segment – combining its years of expertise in building high-end consumer electronics, an understanding in-depth knowledge of the affluent part of the market; and in-depth knowledge as an innovator in the field of DVLED technology.

Sports car display screens

LG DVLED Extreme Home Cinema sets itself apart from conventional residential display solutions by using 2 to 33 million individual diodes – depending on resolution – to deliver exceptional performance and superb brightness, along with years of guaranteed residential life, incredible viewing angles and very high color gamut even in locations with lots of windows and unusually high ambient light.

Notably, Direct View LED technology is visibly and fundamentally different from LED televisions, essentially LCD televisions with LED backlighting that increase screen brightness. With DVLED technology, images are directly generated by LED diodes, delivering a high contrast ratio, incredible brightness and creating some of the most vivid images currently available among video display technologies today.

LG DVLED Extreme Home Cinema also offers transparent 16: 9 screens in sizes ranging from 81 inches to 325 inches diagonally, in addition to having UltraStretch video wall style installations that can provide 32: 9 screens perfect for windowing. from multiple video sources like live sports.

Specially made, specially delivered

The pioneering new LG DVLED product is only available through a new Custom Install Reseller Program and is not available for purchase in stores. To help simplify installation, LG has already packed over thirty of these LG DVLED Extreme Home Cinema sets in various sizes and resolutions. The installation of the new home cinema unit involves training for integrators and assistance to customer support. There is also on-site assistance from an LG field engineer during installation, as well as bi-annual LG site “health check” visits for three years. The LG Connected Care software subscription supplied with the unit allows the integrator to remotely monitor the performance of the system on the client side. Finally, the units come with a five-year limited warranty. LG estimates the cost of these items at around $ 30,000. However, these benefits are only available with LG DVLED Extreme Home Cinema models and not with all-in-one DVLED Home Cinema models which are pre-built and packaged.

According to LG, the high-end nature of the product is more reflected in its shipping process, which uses LG-branded flight cases instead of conventional wooden boxes and crates, better protecting items upon delivery and keeping them organized. during the transport.

Thanks to LG’s unique webOS technology, the LG DVLED Extreme Home Cinema can also be used to display works of art without a consistent Wi-Fi connection. These screens can also interface with webOS compatible content management systems for multi-window viewing.

“It truly is the supercar of home display technologies, delivering a handcrafted quality and performance that appeals to those with luxurious lifestyles who want something that is not only immersive, but also very exclusive. », Shares Dan Smith, vice president in charge of DVLED. displayed at LG Electronics USA. “LG DVLED Extreme Home Cinema Display technology is designed to last 100,000 hours before reaching half-life, which means it could deliver stunning visuals for over 10 years.”

I have repeatedly summarized all the reasons why I am skeptical about investing in cinema. But even if you assume that movie theaters are a good long-term investment, AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) the stock is not the best stock to buy.

Source: Various photographs / Shutterstock.com

If you want to bet on even stocks, AMC stock will definitely be a fun time. AMC’s “Monkey Army” is big, very funny and extremely active on social media.

But if you want to make a smart, long-term investment in a movie theater takeover, IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) is your best bet.

Cinema numbers

It doesn’t take a long time to show that cinema is a bad investment. Forget the pandemic. Total domestic box office sales in the United States in 2019 were $ 11.32 billion. In 2016, total US box office sales were $ 11.37 billion. From 2016 to 2019, AMC averaged an annual net loss of $ 103.6 million.

Movie theaters will not disappear. Going to the movies is a fun experience every now and then. The problem is, people have more and more impressive HD smart TVs in the home. There are more streaming platforms delivering original content than ever before.

AMC stock bulls believe in the return of movie theaters. I am sure theaters have bounced back and will continue to rebound from the pandemic numbers. The million dollar question is will it continue to grow over time? What are they ever doing back to 2016 levels?

Of course, people will continue to go to the movies. People who went to see four movies in the theaters a month could see two or three a month by 2023 or 2024. I’m not predicting the end of the movie industry. But a 25% to 50% drop in income is a major problem for AMC stock investors.

IMAX stock on AMC

Suppose for a minute that you ignore Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), Disney (NYSE:SAY) and all other streaming services. Suppose you want to bet on movie theaters. To me, that is like ignoring Netflix in 2016 and betting on Blockbuster Video. But suppose you believe the future of the entertainment industry is in movie theaters.

Macquarie Research Analyst Chad Beynon recently released a memo that included a deep dive into the whole movie industry.

In the note, Beynon downgraded AMC stock and had harsh words about its valuation. He pointed out that AMC shares have risen by more than 500% in the past 12 months, while the movie group as a whole has only risen by 11%.

Beynon also said that AMC will not have positive free cash flow until 2023.

“Looking ahead, fundamentals are far from where stocks trade given the company has a deferred rent of $ 420 million (2Q21) on top of its annual rent expenses of $ 1 billion. dollars; normalized maintenance investments are approximately $ 140 million and annual interest approximately $ 420 million, ”Beynon said.

Macquarie has an “underperformance” rating and a price target of $ 6 for the AMC stock.

Instead, Baynon named IMAX as his top pick of movie stocks. IMAX is growing, it has a much healthier track record than AMC, and it’s a lot better value. Over the past seven years, IMAX has increased its total number of screens from 863 to 1,654, Beynon said.

“Additionally, we believe the company’s strong margins and well-capitalized balance sheet support our positive outlook,” he says.

Macquarie has an “outperform” rating and a price target of $ 26 for the IMAX stock.

Do not match trade

AMC’s monkeys won’t care what Macquarie has to say. They sure don’t care what I have to say. They love the stock.

But for people who want to make wise long-term investments, AMC stock isn’t the way to play a movie theater takeover. AMC stock is trading at 28.2 times sales. IMAX is trading at 5.2 times sales. AMC stock has net debt of $ 3.7 billion. IMAX has $ 11.8 million in net debt.

In 2019, AMC generated a net loss of $ 149 million. IMAX generated net income of $ 46.8 million.

To be clear, I would not and have not invested in either of these stocks. I think movie ticket sales were probably in secular decline even before the pandemic. But IMAX is clearly more attractive as a cinema rebound investment in just about every way compared to AMC stocks.

Before concluding, I want to add a disclaimer. Normally I would recommend a pair of trades in which investors opt for long IMAX stocks and short AMC stocks. In this case, I would never sell the AMC shares under any circumstances. The AMC share price disconnected from reality a long time ago. It is now the cult stock par excellence.

Trading AMC stocks at a market cap of $ 24.5 billion is just as insane as it is trading at a market cap of $ 245 billion. Once a stock is disconnected from the fundamentals, it can go anywhere in the short term. Do not short sell AMC stocks unless you are prepared to take very big losses.

Does she hate streaming services or add insightful points to the conversation?

Day and date exit strategy is a problem for Patty Jenkins

Patty Jenkins is a seasoned director, although her recent jump in notoriety might make us think otherwise. His first feature film, Monster, won the Oscar for Best Actress (for the role of Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos) after all. But making a big budget superhero movie will propel you to even greater levels of success. Like Richard Donner, his name could be immortalized for generations of children looking for superhero stories. And with that success comes criticism or praise for the comments you make, especially when it’s about such a hot topic as the streaming war.

The director spoke with the Los Angeles Times during CinemaCon about his thoughts on the day-and-date release strategy model (when movies drop on streaming services the same day they premiere in theaters) and other important topics related to streaming and cinematic experience. Some of her views are very pro-theater, but that doesn’t mean she should dismiss the magic of some online platforms.

Is Jenkins okay with streaming?

Day-to-date streaming wasn’t very popular just two years ago, and the threat of theater closings around the world has led to an increase in the strategy. However, the switch to streaming was not directly linked to the pandemic. We’re already getting closer to getting everything live immediately, and the coronavirus has simply given the streaming wars a boost to do it faster, which Jenkins acknowledges.

But staying home and watching a movie from the comfort of your sofa has many advantages. One of Jenkins’ biggest issues with the opposite (theaters) continued to be the lack of diversity. Not just in the types of people shown on screen (and working behind those very important cameras), but just a mix of different options to watch. “You can have six theaters in town… and they all play the same three movies,” she shares. Where do you go when you’ve already watched all three? Directly on Netflix.

The boom in streaming and home premieres has also shown the industry that people want to see more than superhero movies, like dramas and documentaries.

Patty Jenkins still thinks movie exclusive premieres are better than daily releases

Most of us remember our experience of watching Wonder Woman 1984. Rather than flocking to crowded theaters like with the first movie, we snuggled up in our beds and watched it for free (or, if you’re like me, for $ 30 because Canada still doesn’t have HBO. Max.) While this is a safe choice for consumers due to the very high cases of COVID-19, it was not necessarily a happy decision for the people who made it.

Jenkins agrees that if the day and date model worked for HBO Max and WW198, considering that this was their only real choice, it was still a “heartbreaking experience” and “extremely damaging” to the film. Obviously, the box office impacts have been the strongest. The film drew a worldwide total of $ 166.5 million, related to $ 822.8 million that the first movie did. But what about the nefarious aspects outside of lining the pockets of producers? “I don’t think it plays the same way in streaming,” she explains. And she is right. Watching expensive action sequences and flashy character introductions requires more than my very old iPad screen or my living room TV with mediocre speakers. They could enjoy the big screen and the atmosphere of the fans watching the comics come to life.

But all things end up leaving theaters, right?

One of the biggest issues with Patty Jenkins’ comments, aside from the fact that Wonder Woman 1984 hasn’t been a critical success, it’s that eventually we all have to watch stuff on streaming platforms. If you missed a movie’s initial release, does that mean you’ll never fully enjoy it? This is simply not true. Even if you missed the explosively thrilling premiere of Avengers: Endgame, you will still be able to fully enjoy it if you watch it on Disney + a decade later. Of course, some of the feelings might not be the same. But if a movie is only good because you watch it in a movie theater, then it can’t be that good. Law?

Fortunately, Jenkins knows this is something to consider. “I make films for the big screen. I agree with people who watch it for the second or third time on their phone, but I’m not doing it for this experience, ”she explains. But if a movie looks good on all platforms, it increases the number of people who can watch it. Improved accessibility expands your audience and treats every moviegoer with respect, however they prefer their viewing experience.

Conversation on live streaming services gets messy

We agree that movies can be better in theaters, but there are pros and cons to both ways of watching. But it seems Jenkins has a general contempt for anything that doesn’t strike a movie theater. She explains that direct streaming movies are like her and that she never hears or reads about them. Oh, and that can’t establish “legendary greatness.”

These are harsh words for someone who has a big problem with Netflix. Two years ago, she won a $ 10 million contract with the platform, showing she has room for collaboration with what hinders legendary greatness. But according to her, this is all due to the fact that she believes in “limited series and television series”.

What is his solution?

So where do we go in a world that has already established a love for streaming movies? Like other directors who came before her, Jenkins is adamant that we’re keeping the film’s exclusivity alive. She says filmmakers need to be “very clear on the absolute necessity of this” and that there needs to be a unified response to change. The system will have to “work aggressively” to keep the industry alive and thriving for people who have overpriced popcorn in their hands, and the day-and-date model cannot be treated as one. “Fatality”.

But it’s not just filmmakers who have the power to change, apparently. Jenkins adds that if a streamer commits “largely to the theatrical experience” and plants “the flag” for that model, then it will be configured to function with the so-called legendary greatness mentioned above.

We don’t hate the Day-and-Date model as much as Patty Jenkins, but we love the theater

Some people like to watch things with unlimited food options and no exclusions on bathroom breaks. Others love the buzz that comes from watching movie trailers in a crowded room, all anticipating the next big blockbuster. And for most of us, we can deal with either option depending on the circumstances. We need options and the streaming services want to give them to us.

It’s curious to see Jenkins hitting streaming services while simultaneously participating in the creation of new content. Some of us have probably only watched our own movie, WW1984, because it was so easily accessible. We want to keep the magic of movies alive, but that doesn’t mean we have to kill the convenience of watching at home.

Readers, we want to hear your opinions. Do you agree with Patty Jenkins on the date and date release model of the movies? Or do you hope this is a strategy that will endure long after the pandemic is over? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

E-commerce grocer Thrive Market has launched a new movie-style popcorn, sourced from farmers who found themselves with a massive surplus of almonds after movie theaters began closing during the pandemic. Now, Thrive members can purchase Butterfly Almonds, a mellow variety typically only found in theaters, instead of the Mushroom Almonds more commonly available to consumers.

Butterfly cores are very expansive when they burst, increasing their ability to retain the flavor of butter or other ingredients. This quality generally makes grain growth profitable, but that changed when COVID-19 hit.

“A lot of popcorn is grown specifically for movie theaters. And with all of them closed, it was just sitting there, filling all these silos with farmers, and they had nothing to do with it, ”said Jenna Engleman, senior manager of Thrive Market Brands. Variety. “We were able to be part of a solution that helps support producers, reduces food waste and allows our members to reproduce the full movie experience from home. “

Thrive connected with a network of 100 growers across the Midwest who had over 15 million pounds of surplus kernels. “It’s actually the end of September that this year’s crops will be harvested, as the popcorn kernels are harvested after the kernels are dry on the stems,” Engleman said. “So it was all the more crucial that we help move inventory before the end of this month. Otherwise, this year’s harvest would have been completely wasted because there would have been nowhere to store it.

As of yet, the grocer has not decided whether movie theater popcorn will be a limited-edition product on the site or whether it will continue to partner with the reopening of theaters.

“Our mission is to make healthy living easy and affordable for every American family. And in addition to our main mission, we really focus on sustainability, ”Engleman said. “One of the things we love about being an e-commerce [platform] is our ability to be nimble and try to deliver solutions like this. Some of our product innovators are working on different upcycling related projects, to find ways to reuse or recycle existing products.

Thrive Market’s movie theater popcorn is available now for $ 1.99 per 28-ounce bag.
